A.R. Rahman hospitalized; Opens up about health and personal life

On March 16, music legend A.R. Rahman was taken to the hospital in Chennai due to dehydration. Following a sequence of tests, including an ECG, the composer spoke about his encounter with illness and the recent controversy surrounding him distancing himself from wife Saira Banu in an interview to India Today.

Rahman jokingly attributed the disease to his own “masti” (mischief) and explained, “I was fasting and I even went vegetarian. I got a gastric attack and was admitted to the hospital. The next thing I knew, a press note was issued, and it was all over the news. It was lovely to receive so many sweet messages from people who wish me to live.”

Stepping into his personal life, Rahman acknowledged the media spotlight, stating, “It’s humanizing. You can come across as inaccessible sometimes. I have experienced my highs and lows, and that is true. All of us have something unique; we are all superheroes in our own homes. My fans made me a superhero, that is why I have named my next tour ‘Wonderment.’ It’s a wonder to be loved and blessed so much.”

Last November, Saira Banu had also broken up 29 years of marriage, and they mentioned quite an emotional burden as the cause. The formal communication was made mentioning that despite both loving each other deeply, issues created a space that couldn’t be crossed even.
