Katrina Kaif, duped by deepfake, speaks fluent French in the morphed clip

Concerns rise over deepfake videos of Bollywood stars.

Videos manipulated using deepfake technology to morph the voices of celebrities have emerged on social media platforms. A fan page recently shared footage from 2017 of actors Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan at an event. However, Kaif’s voice was artificially generated to sound like she spoke fluent French.

While the descriptive text made clear it was AI-generated, many viewers were seemingly convinced due to the video’s realism.

Separately, clips of Ranveer Singh and Aamir Khan endorsing political parties went viral. Upon verification, their voices were found to be digitally altered without consent.

Singh’s official spokesperson confirmed an FIR had been lodged with the cyber cell for a probe. In his PSA, the actor cautioned followers about deepfakes.

Experts highlight the disturbing invasion of privacy through such manipulated media and the absence of adequate safeguards.

With advancements in deep learning, producing hyper-realistic fake videos has become easier. However, they can fuel misinformation and impact public discourse if left unchecked.

Stakeholders feel regulations and awareness programs are need of the hour to curb misuse of emerging technologies for manipulative purposes. Ensuring cyber security and the integrity of public discussions remain a challenge.
