Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man, receives acclaim.
Actor Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, Monkey Man, won widespread praise after its premiere at the SXSW festival last month. In an interview with Variety at the LA launch, Patel opened up about the journey to making the action thriller in which he also stars as the lead character.
When asked about the possibility of a sequel, the actor credited the experience of bringing Monkey Man to life as an “undertaking”. While not ruling out returning, Patel said he avoided getting ahead of himself in celebration of its release.
The film follows an ex-convict seeking vengeance against those who wronged him in the past. Patel highlighted themes of fighting for the marginalized by including Vipin Sharma’s character, Alpha, a trans woman.
Monkey Man additionally features Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, and Makarand Deshpande, among others. Critics have praised its taut storytelling, themes, and Dev Patel’s accomplished directorial debut.
After a decade of gestation, Patel’s dream project has been released to widespread critical acclaim. The actor remains non-committal on sequel plans, instead focused on celebrating this milestone achievement.
