Paranormal Activity set to remain record-holder for highest return on investment.
The low-budget horror flick Paranormal Activity continues to dwarf even big-budget blockbusters in profit percentage, highlighting quality may matter more than finances. Shot for a mere $15,000 in 2006, the film starring new actors paid $500 each was picked up by Paramount post buzz on festivals. It spent $200,000 more on reshoots and promotions.
Yet the final output, including marketing costs, was under $220,000, with the worldwide box office soaring to $193 million.
This represents over 13,000 times the profit margin, making Paranormal Activity the most lucrative film ever.
Even today, 16 years on, its earnings surpass several 200-crore grossers in India, such as RRR, KGF 2, Jawan, and Pathan. Only Dangal and Baahubali 2 generated more revenue among local movies.
The indie horror’s success underscores bigger budgets don’t necessarily equal commercial success. With the right idea, minimal funding too can set tills ringing globally.
As they say, great films don’t need big budgets to connect – just impactful storytelling that engages audiences. Paranormal Activity stands testament.
