Jennie is the lead rapper of BLACKPINK, and during a recent talk, she opened her heart on her journey to self-acceptance and insecurities of her childhood days. The captivating stage performer looked back at her childhood days when she had been tagged as “mandu,” or dumpling, because of her chubby cheeks. While this cute nickname is picked up by fans nowadays, it added to her feelings of insecurity in earlier times.
During an interview with actress-singer Hyeri, Jennie shared that when she was young, she hated having a round face and would always try to make her cheeks look thinner by sucking them in. However, it seems her point of view has changed. Now, she confesses that she feels a sense of loss when her chubby cheeks disappear due to her busy schedule and weight loss. Hyeri resonated with this sentiment, sharing her own desire for a V-line face shape.
Last year, Jennie received body-shaming comments upon the release of the concept photos for her album “Mantra”. In one powerful photo, she sat against a vehicle in a white bodysuit while wind blew through her curly hair. While many of her fans thought highly of her pose, not-so-encouraging remarks surfaced online; critics said it was due to the angle of the photo and asked for an edit since she looked “bloated.”.
Currently, there is great anticipation for Jennie’s full-length album “Ruby,” expected to be released on March 7. The buzz had increased with the release of the third track, “Love Hangover,” on January 31, in collaboration with fellow rapper Dominic Fike.
On one episode of Hyell’s Club, Jennie described “Love Hangover” as a lyrical exploration into the complication of love, even depicting when one finds themselves falling into it, knowing it could mean some heartache. She has said the track features both R&B and pop influences but is not in the dance music genre.
