Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has invited Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to watch her forthcoming film Emergency, in which Kangana plays the role of Priyanka’s grandmother, late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The invitation was extended when the two met in Parliament recently.
In the interaction, Kangana revealed, “Actually, in Parliament, I met Priyanka Gandhi ji, and the first thing I told her was, ‘Aapko Emergency dekhni chahiye’.” And she very graciously said, “Yeah, maybe,” added Kangana, “You will quite like it.”
Kangana emphasized the care and sensitivity she has devoted to her portrayal of Indira Gandhi, particularly during the time when the Emergency was imposed in India. “I believe it’s a very sensitive and sensible portrayal of one episode and one personality. I’ve taken great care to portray Mrs. Gandhi with dignity,” she noted.
Recalling her research, Kangana said, “While researching, I felt people have talked a lot about her personal life-her relationships and controversial equations. I was like, there’s so much more to a person. I have taken special care not to delve into those areas since women are often reduced to their relationships with men and sensational encounters.
Set against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent periods in Indian political history, Emergency is based on the state of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975. The film helmed and starring Kangana, also features Anupam Kher and Shreyas Talpade in the lead roles.
