Kristen Stewart voices dissent over Hollywood’s approach to diversity.
In a recent interview with Porter magazine, actor Kristen Stewart expressed reservations about Hollywood’s tendency to “check boxes” in the name of diversity. Promoting films headlined by popular names like Margot Robbie and Maggie Gyllenhaal as examples, Stewart said one cannot deny their talent.
However, considering how limited the effort has been, calling it a “broadening perspective” would be disingenuous. “There’s a thinking that settling for a handful of women can dispose of systemic issues..it feels superficial,” noted the Love Lies Bleeding star.
Her statements came in the context of facing financial struggles while making her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. In a podcast, Stewart remarked that she has been offered superhero projects before but dislikes their mechanical approach, which is devoid of personal touch.
The actor admitted she might consider starring in a Marvel movie if acclaimed director Greta Gerwig helmed it and endowed her faith, which could catalyze positive change. Her faith in women driving change was evident, but doubt over the industry’s willingness to decentralize power lingers.
Meanwhile, Stewart is awaiting the release of her directorial and will be seen in the vampire film Flesh and Bones. Known for speaking her mind freely, such observations from the veteran actor on diversity politics continue sparking debate in the entertainment circle.
