Actress Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7 after her comments last year over the Israel-Palestine conflict. Since she got fired, the actress reveals opportunities in Hollywood started slowing down. In a recent interview, she spoke to them about the aftermath that her dismissal brought along, apart from the mixed reactions coming her way from fans worldwide.
Following the success of the previous installment, Barrera was supposed to reprise her role in Scream 7 after successfully playing the role of Sam Carpenter in Scream in 2022 and Scream 6 in 2023. She got axed from the film in November 2023, just days after social media posts surfaced in support of Palestine, where she termed Israel’s actions during the Israel-Hamas war as “genocide and ethnic cleansing.”.
“It was quiet for, like, 10 months. I was still getting offers for small things here and there, but the message was clear: ‘Oh, she probably doesn’t have work; she’ll say yes to anything’,” Barrera remembered, looking back in an interview with The Independent.
Irrespective, Barrera claimed no grudge against Scream, considering it huge for her career. She did, however, say that one lasting ramification of her firing has been the sympathy she receives from fans at conventions. They say, ‘What they did to you is so messed up, I’m so sorry that happened!’ It’s something I think will never go away. The franchise is never going to end, so while I love those movies, the reminders of that sour moment make it a bit strange, she added.
The 34-year-old actor first appeared in such Mexican telenovelas as Siempre Tuya Acapulco (2013) and So Much Love (2015), before crossing over to the US in 2018 with the Starz drama series Vida. Yet it was in Scream, in which she had leading roles, that sealed the deal in solidifying her as a fan favorite. Next: biographical drama The Collaboration about the relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
