Netflix India has unveiled the much-anticipated trailer for Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles. This musical masterpiece delves into the captivating, untold story of Punjab’s original rockstar, the beloved Amar Singh Chamkila, who became a mass sensation. The trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse into the life of this legendary figure.
Diljit Dosanjh plays ‘Chamkila’, the iconic singer who rose from the depths of poverty to become a record-breaking artist. In the 1980s, his music soared to unparalleled popularity, captivating hearts nationwide. However, his audacious lyrics and unrelenting rise to stardom also sparked controversy and resentment, which tragically culminated in his untimely assassination at the tender age of 27.
The trailer sets the stage in a rustic Punjab village, where a young man (portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh) is introduced in an akhada for a live performance. Mistakenly referred to as Chamkila, he initially objects, only to be met with dismissive remarks implying that his name is inconsequential. Nevertheless, his music transcends boundaries, captivating the villagers, especially the women, while drawing criticism from conservative voices who take offence to the boldness of his lyrics. Along his journey, he finds a harmonious singing partner in Amarjot Kaur, played by Parineeti Chopra.
This cinematic marvel boasts the musical genius of AR Rahman, a Grammy Award-winning maestro, who takes charge of the film’s soul-stirring soundtrack. Teaming up with renowned lyricist Irshad Kamil, this collaboration marks a reunion of the Rahman-Imtiaz-Irshad trio nine years after their acclaimed work in “Tamasha.” Two songs from the film’s album, “Ishq Mitaye” and “Naram Kaalja,” have already been released, garnering an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences.
Both Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra lend their voices to the original Chamkila songs in Punjabi, adding a personal touch to the film’s authenticity. The movie showcases live music recordings, capturing the raw essence of every moment as Diljit and Parineeti mesmerize audiences with their live performances in the vibrant Akhadas.
Reflecting on the creative process behind “Amar Singh Chamkila,” Imtiaz Ali shares his perspective, “The stories of young musicians who challenge societal norms, achieve unprecedented success, and meet tragic ends are unfortunately universal. Chamkila’s life and times raise important questions for society, but ultimately, it is a celebration of an artist’s life—a musician who could never abandon his true love for music.”
