Oscars 2024: Records on the line as Gladstone, Murphy aim for history

Oscars 2024 promises historic wins.

The 96th Academy Awards, slated for March 27th, looks set to create several new records and milestones. Indigenous actress Lily Gladstone is the favorite to win Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon, potentially becoming the first Native American to do so.

Justine Triet can achieve multiple firsts – as the inaugural French woman to win Original Screenplay for Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, and only the fourth female Best Director alongside previous recipients Katheryn Bigelow, Chloe Zhao, and Jane Campion.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is tipped to bag his maiden Best Actor trophy for Oppenheimer, making him the first from Ireland in the category.

Two wins for Emma Stone—Best Actress and Best Picture for Poor Things—could see her emulate Frances McDormand as the second person to win acting and producing Oscars. Stone is also seeking a second Best Actress award.

Veterans Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro, with nominations for Nyad and Killers of the Flower Moon, respectively, stand to join an elite club of three-time acting award holders, including Katherine Hepburn and Meryl Streep.

Martin Scorsese, up for directorship of Flower Moon, is chasing his second victory and could become the oldest winner at age 81.

Hayao Miyazaki, 83, wants to replicate Spirited Away’s accomplishment with Heron’s Best Animated Feature nod.

With a record 13 nominations, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer could match Ben-Hur’s milestone of 11 wins from 1959.

The ceremony on March 27th promises a night of many fascinating firsts and records being set.
