Sukumar’s Telugu action thriller Pushpa 2: The Rule created another frenzy when it broke all the box office records. According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the Hindi dubbed version of Allu Arjun-starrer has emerged to become the first Hindi film to breach ₹700 crore at the Indian box office and new gold standard for ₹700 crore club.
First, AR Murugadoss’s revenge saga Ghajini in 2008 was the first Hindi film to create ₹100 crore. The movie, which was a remake of his 2005 Tamil hit, set the tone for further records to follow. Om Shanti Om by Farah Khan remained the first to touch ₹ 90 crore till then post -Ghajini and Singh Is Kinng the following year with Akshay Kumar.
The 2010’s release of another Aamir Khan-starrer had created a ripple at the box office by creating the first Hindi film to break ₹200 crore domestically. With Rajkumar Hirani at the helms and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, this coming-of-age comedy starred Kareena Kapoor and R Madhavan with Aamir Khan.
The collaboration of Vinod, Rajkumar, and Aamir continued to raise the stakes with his 2014 science-fiction satire that created the ₹300 crore club. This film too had a large ensemble cast that roped in Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput.
SS Rajamouli’s 2017 historical epic had taken the box office by storm, becoming the first Hindi film to breach both the ₹400 crore and ₹500 crore marks, despite being a dubbed version of a Telugu blockbuster. Prabhas and Anushka Shetty starrer redefined expectations from dubbed films.
It had been the first Hindi horror-comedy, released earlier this year by Amar Kaushik, starring an ensemble cast featuring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, to reach the ₹600 crore club.
Now, on the 19th day of its release, with Pushpa 2 reaching the ₹700 crore mark, the excitement seems to go on. Taran Adarsh tweeted on social media, “700 NOT OUT. #Pushpa2 scripts HISTORY. Inaugurates the ₹700 cr Club. The phenomenal trending has been unprecedented.” And with Christmas and New Year celebrations on the cards, expectations are high for the film to maintain the record-breaking spree. As of now, the Hindi version has earned ₹704.25 crore.
