Sharmin Segal: Navigating Bollywood’s challenges and successes

Bollywood has long been a hub for star kids, and while a few of them manage to shine through talent and grit, some find it very difficult to get the right roles. Amidst all this, actress Sharmin Segal, niece of acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, presents herself as an example of how one would struggle with pressures and expectations of the industry.

More than a decade since she first appeared on the silver screen, a big break has always eluded Sharmin. Of course, she acted in one of the biggest box office hits, but her acting was panned by critics. That is a problem most nepo kids have faced-either they have failed to connect with the audience or failed at playing different roles. On the personal front, Sharmin is married to Aman Mehta, the Executive Director of Torrent Pharmaceuticals and a millionaire in his own right.

Sharmin’s entry into the film industry was behind the camera, assisting her uncle first on the sets of movies like Mary Kom and Bajirao Mastani. She made her acting debut in 2019 with the romantic drama Malaal opposite Meezaan Jafri.

In 2022, she appeared in a horror-comedy, Athithi Bhooto Bhava, which was released on ZEE5 OTT. The movie fared below average and received low ratings; it has proved to be the bottom of her acting career. Since then, Sharmin took time off and got busy reassessing her future as an artist.

She returned early in 2024 with Heeramandi, a web series ensemble by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, featuring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, and Richa Chadha. The series got kudos from audiences, but Sharmin’s performance is getting highly panned. The majority feel that she lacks emotional depth that the character demands. Even speculations have gone to the extent that her selection had more to do with nepotism than ability.

While Sharmin’s professional journey saw its share of ups and downs, her personal life seems to be doing very well. She married Aman Mehta in 2023, whose net worth is approximately Rs 53,800 crore. As her film career remains finding its proper ground, it looks like marriage is a secured positive thing in her life, proving once again that not all routes in Bollywood are defined only by career success.
