The report by Justice K. Hema’s committee has unveiled disturbing revelations about the Malayalam film industry, including incidents of sexual assault and harassment.
Formed in response to a 2017 assault case involving an actress, the three-member commission, also comprising former bureaucrat K.B. Valsalakumari and veteran actress Sharada, submitted its findings to the government in 2019. The report has recently been made public.
Among the shocking details, the report highlights an incident where an actress was coerced into performing a hugging scene with an actor who had previously assaulted her.
Despite numerous retakes, the actress struggled to complete the scene, reflecting her deep emotional distress. The report notes the pervasive issue of women in cinema facing exploitation, with many enduring harassment silently due to fears of backlash.
The report also criticizes systemic issues within the industry, including inadequate facilities for women, pay disparities, and widespread gender discrimination.
It underscores a prevailing assumption that women in cinema are driven by fame and financial gain, rather than a genuine passion for their craft.
