The Resurgence of the Cross Pendant: Fashion’s Devotional Accessory.
In the ever-evolving world of fashion, a surprising trend has emerged – the cross pendant is making a comeback, capturing the attention of style enthusiasts and designers alike.
From high-end labels to contemporary jewellery brands, the cross has become the latest “it” accessory, with everyone from Valliyan by Nitya Arora to Sabyasachi creating their own unique interpretations.
The cross pendant’s resurgence is not entirely unexpected, as it has had a long and storied history in the fashion realm. During the ’80s and ’90s, the crucifix pendant or earring was a staple among rock musicians, symbolizing a sense of rebellion and individuality.
The credit for the cross pendant’s recent revival can be attributed to pop culture icons like Madonna, who famously incorporated the devotional object into her “Like a Prayer” music video in 1989, as well as Kim Kardashian, who donned a stunning amethyst and diamond necklace once worn by Princess Diana in 1987.
Closer to home, reality TV sensation Shalini Passi and Bollywood stars like Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Bhumi Pednekar have been spotted sporting the cross pendant, further fueling the trend.
“I think with the kind of negativity happening across the globe, we are all craving and desiring this reassurance of a positive tomorrow. And holy signs and symbols like the cross do absolutely that. They are and always have been icons of hope.
So wearing a cross in the form of an embroidered motif or jewelry piece resonates with the idea of a prayer for a better tomorrow,” opines designer Aniket Satam.
However, the cross as a fashion statement is not without its complexities. While the cross is primarily a Christian iconography, it has also been associated with the Goth movement, where inverted crosses were used as anti-Christ motifs.
Nonetheless, designers and style experts emphasize the versatility and symbolic resonance of the cross pendant, which transcends boundaries, cultures, and religions, representing various civilizations and worldviews.
As accessory designer Saahil Kapoor of Doux Amour explains, “Styling cross accessories is all about balance—pair bold, embellished pendants with minimal outfits for an edgy look, or layer delicate cross motifs with other chains for a softer, bohemian vibe.
Whether you embrace the trend for its symbolism or its aesthetic, it’s a versatile and meaningful addition to any wardrobe.”
