Musk withdraws lawsuit against OpenAI without explanation.
In a surprise move, Elon Musk has requested the dismissal of a lawsuit filed against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, earlier this year.
Musk had sued the artificial intelligence startup he co-founded in 2015, alleging it deviated from its founding goal of developing beneficial AI. OpenAI countered that Musk had previously backed a for-profit model.
However, Musk’s lawyers recently sought to withdraw the case before the court hearing without stating any reasons. The move comes just days after Apple’s partnership with OpenAI to boost Siri using ChatGPT went public.
Musk had criticized the deal on Twitter, cautioning Apple about ceding user data control. But investors welcomed the alliance as Apple reached a $3 trillion market cap.
The lawsuit’s removal “without prejudice” means Musk could refile it later. His feud with OpenAI intensified after the Apple announcement amid an ongoing race to build powerful AI.
Musk separately launched xAI in 2023, intending to build comprehensive machine intelligence, debuting chatbot Grok to challenge ChatGPT.
With the legal dispute terminated mysteriously before the hearing, questions remain on the underlying causes of the anger between Musk and OpenAI.
