The lights at Tesla’s German gigafactory near Berlin could come back on soon. E.dis, the power company working tirelessly to restore electricity after an arson attack, said there’s a chance power might be restored as early as Friday evening.
It’s been over a week since the massive Tesla plant lost power on March 5th. Activists claimed responsibility, increasing pressure on E.dis to get the factory back up and running ASAP. They’ve been working around the clock in 3 shifts to fix damaged infrastructure and conduct necessary testing.
Local officials are optimistic the restart could happen even sooner than expected.
“It now looks like it won’t take until the end of the week,” said one minister, impressed by the rapid progress.
Getting power restored will allow Tesla’s factory to start churning out its 1,000 cars per day once more.
The shutdown has been hugely costly for Tesla, which is estimated to have lost over $100 million so far. Employees and the company are no doubt eager to return to full production.
All eyes will be on E.dis’s high-voltage tests on Monday, with hopes that electricity can flow again by Friday evening. It’s a nail-biting wait for Tesla and the local economy as it brings the factory back from the brink.
