India’s largest airline, IndiGo, which launched operation in the year 2006, is gearing up to introduce business class services on twelve of its domestic routes from mid-November this year. During IndiGo’s 18th-year anniversary celebration, the airline’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, revealed this plan.
The public’s information indicates that bookings for these new business class seats will commence on Tuesday. Elbers said that the seats will be on the currently most used business routes and some of the Delhi flights.
This plan was initiated when IndiGo deemed it appropriate to tap the rapidly expanding domestic market by entering the full-service market segment. The airline will also start a frequent flier program christened IndiGo BluChip as part of its customer relationship management program.
Earlier this year, Indigo announced that it would offer business class on some routes this year, which is a new strategy for the carrier, which mainly had single-class planes.
Currently, airlines all under the Tata group, Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express and Vistara are the domestic carriers that provide business class seats. IndiGo has been dubbed to have ventured into this service offering to counter its rivals in the international markets and time offer consumers a choice.
The launch of business class seats on IndiGO’s domestic legs is likely to be ‘better accepted by the existing user base, especially business and frequent flying community.’ In view of this development, one can safely conclude that the company is set to consolidate its operations in the fiercely competitive Indian aviation industry environment.
