A press release by Tata Trusts states that Noel Tata, half-brother to the late Ratan Tata, was appointed chairman of India’s Tata Trusts.
Tata Trusts was founded by Noel and Ratan’s great-grandfather Jamsetji Tata in 1892, decades after he founded the Tata group.
Ratan Tata left on October 9 at 86, and Noel was the frontline replacement for chairman.
Noel’s appointment is crucial because Tata Trusts owns 66% of Tata Sons, a brand that houses several companies with over 150 years of experience.
Noel is a trustee on the board of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, as well as a member of these two. He is also the chairman of Tata Trent and vice chairman of Tata Steel.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sussex and attended the International Executive Programme at INSEAD, a French business school. He also has Irish citizenship.
Noel began with Tata International and later became the managing director of Trent, the retail arm of Tata Group. He was then elevated to the position of chairman of Trent and vice chairman of Tata Steel.
State funeral for Ratan Tata A day before Noel’s appointment (as chairman of Tata Trusts), Ratan Tata received a state funeral in Mumbai.
Thousands of people, including corporate heads, politicians, and celebrities, gathered in Mumbai’s financial hub to pay their last respects to Ratan Tata before the funeral.
