RBI: 98.08% of ₹2,000 notes returned—what if you haven’t?

On May 19, 2023, the RBI declared a withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes. Since then, the status of such returned amount has been published occasionally. The RBI announced that 98.08% of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation were returned.

However, the currency notes are still in circulation and are, therefore, still legal tender. The RBI announced the withdrawal of the ₹2,000 notes on May 19, 2023. Since then, it has periodically published the status of the amount of such notes being returned.

The ₹2,000 banknotes were originally introduced in November 2016 after demonetizing the ₹1,000 and ₹500 notes. The combined value of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation has fallen to ₹6,839 crore as of November 29, 2024, when it was ₹3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, the day the government announced the withdrawal.

Although the facility for depositing or exchanging the notes was available at all bank branches in the country, it was only till October 7, 2023.

The facility has been available since October 9, 2024, only at the 19 RBI Issue Offices, which accept the ₹2000 banknotes from individuals/entities for deposit into their bank accounts.
