Sergey Brin’s intervention: convincing Google employees to stay Amid openAi offer

Google co-founder Sergey Brin not only made a personal phone call to an employee planning to leave the company for a position at OpenAI but also specified his future projects that should keep the employee at Google. Brin allegedly told them that in addition to their compensation, they could get an above-average wage if they chose to stay or work at Google. The report cites an anonymous AI researcher, arguing that this reflects a bigger trend in the cut-throat tech rivalry where top engineers – a small population – are the highly coveted persons dedicated to getting ahead in the AI race. The requirement of highly skilled and experienced AI professionals is mainly branded throughout the major leading tech companies.

Brin’s action is not a singular incident, as many other big tech firms also chase prodigious talents from other companies’ prospects with high remunerations. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, as per the example, was sending personal emails to AI researchers of Google’s DeepMind, granting them employment offers without needing an interview. On the other hand, Zuckerberg confirmed recently Meta’s giant stock of H100 chips manufactured by Nvidia, a company that is quite hard to access. According to their plans, Meta will have more than 340,000 of these chips at their disposal by the end of 2024.

Note that this competition for data capacity concerns Google Meta and all the other big corporations in the industry that want to attract the best talent. Unfortunately, Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity’s CEO and founder, could not lure a senior researcher from Meta because the latter did not have enough GPU resources available at the time. Sterniv, the respondent, had to deliver 10,000 H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), then only Meta would be willing to offer the contract.

While some experts are talking about AI-driven products, Srinivas points out the significance of bidding those products with personal passion and genuine interest. They no longer act as sheerorestricters that depend on market requirements; instead, they promote creating AI tailored for the values and needs of individuals. Thus, this user-centred approach creates an undeniable bond between the creators and the technology. They both regard the creator as the first user, making them feel natural in exploiting the advanced technologies provided.
