Tata Power-DDL gets patent for transformer life extension device

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) has been granted a 20-year patent on a self-regenerating transformer breather.

Breather is a device that saves a transformer from moisture ingress and, thus, increases the extended life of electric transformers.

Tata Power-DDL has announced the implementation of patented technology that will replace Silica gel in a transformer’s breather, further reducing maintenance person-days and protecting the transformer against moisture damage.

‘It is further said that the new technology means that Silica gel will have to be checked or replaced only in the maintenance schedule of a transformer once in two years ”.

Accordingly, in the traditional design, Silica gel needs to be replaced 4-6 times before a maintenance schedule of 2 years,” it was further said.

Tata Power DDL’s Engineering team designed and tested the ‘self-regenerating breather’ successfully in December 2015, it said.

In 2016-17, 20 breathers were pilot-installed, which yielded very encouraging results. The Company filed for a patent for ‘self-regenerating breather’ technology in 2016.

Moisture in the air causes outages and reduces the life of a transformer. The innovation uses the waste heat from the top plate of the transformer to reduce moisture content in the inlet air to the DT Breather.

Tata Power-DDL Chief Executive Officer Gajanan S Kale said, “This patent is another testament to our tech edge, which will prepare our power supply infra-ready for difficult weather conditions.”.
