Following the escalation of political violence in Bangladesh and the current political crisis, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering looking for other countries to host the 2024 Women’s T20 World. The T20I event, which was planned to take place in Bangladesh in October, may be shifted to another country.
The ICC first turned to BCCI to host the competition, but the board secretary ‘vigorously’ rejected it, arguing that the monsoon period is observed in India and the fact that the BCCI is going to host next year’s fifty-over World Cup.
They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We are in the monsoon, and on top of that, we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signal that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” BCCI Shah told The Times of India.
Now, as claimed by the daily, it is the UAE, which has turned out to be the frontrunner after they have rejected the bid. The stadiums in the region include those in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, and all are international standards.
Thus, apart from the UAE, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are in consideration. The venue of the conference may be decided by this week.
A few weeks ago, there was news of the Bangladeshi Cricket Board (BCB) intending to lobby the United Nations (UN) in the bid to retain the hosting rights of the women’s world cup.
The move was made following the situation where several governments of the world, including the Indian, English, Australian, New Zealander, and Scottish, recommend their citizens not travel to Bangladesh in view of the violence sweeping the country due to a coup.
