2025 ICC champions trophy: PCB boycott risks $65M loss amid India dispute

Tensions Escalate: PCB Faces Potential Financial Woes Over 2025 Champions Trophy Dilemma.

The saga surrounding the hosting of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy continues to intensify, with the latest reports suggesting that the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) potential boycott of the tournament could result in significant financial consequences.

Ever since the ICC awarded the hosting rights of the prestigious event to Pakistan, concerns have been mounting over India’s participation, given the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The ICC has now officially informed the PCB that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to send its team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. This has left the host nation in a precarious position, with the government reportedly considering the withdrawal of the Pakistan team from the tournament altogether.

According to Cricbuzz, if the PCB does decide to boycott the event, they stand to lose out on the entire hosting fee, amounting to a staggering $65 million. Additionally, the board could face cuts to the funding they receive from the ICC.

The BCCI’s intimation to the ICC about its inability to travel to Pakistan has left the PCB with a difficult choice. The ICC has reportedly stated that if the PCB agrees to a ‘Hybrid Model’ for the tournament, where India’s matches and the knockout games are held in a neutral venue, the host nation will still receive the “full hosting fees” and get to host the “majority of the matches.”

Naqvi emphasized that the PCB has a “clear stance” and that they are waiting for the BCCI to provide a written statement on their position.

The board’s decision on whether to accept the hybrid model or potentially withdraw from the tournament altogether could have far-reaching consequences, both on the cricketing front and the broader diplomatic landscape between India and Pakistan.

As the stakeholders continue to navigate these complex dynamics, the cricket world eagerly awaits a resolution that would not only safeguard the interests of the participating teams but also preserve the integrity and prestige of the ICC Champions Trophy.
