With the Indian team preparing for a two-day practice match against the Prime Minister’s 11, a former Australian first-class cricketer recalls when he represented the PM’s XI and got the wickets of some of Indian cricket’s biggest legends at the time.
During his first-class career, Greg Rowell played for New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania and accumulated 46 FC and 27 List-A games.
According to a report published in Indian Express, he is a successful lawyer. He also served as an official with Cricket Australia when he discussed India vs. Prime Minister’s 11 games at Manuka Oval in 1991.
A fairly young prospect at the time, he looked to make a strong case for himself, and he sure did shine. He finished with figures of 7/27, which included the wickets of some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, like Ravi Shastri and a young Sachin Tendulkar.
Reflecting on the post-match thoughts, he recalled, “I remember Shastri spoke warmly at the end of the game. And Prime Minister Hawke came to the dressing room to chat back from those days when politicians were popular. That was a thrill.”
Both India and the 11 of the PM would look to make an impression when they play each other. There are enough young players on both sides who would like to make their mark.
