Australia, in a risky and righteous attempt, has decided to withdraw from the extremely prestigious men’s T20 series against Afghanistan: the enduring Taliban rule and its limitation on women and girls ‘ rights and liberties in the country.
The Australian team not only will not appear in this three-match series but it was supposed to take place in the United Arab Emirates before, as well.
CA has so taken steps based on the government’s advice due to the worrying rate of discrimination against women and girls in Afghanistan which it clearly shows. They have already called off a single Test match in and three-match men’s ODI series in March 2023.
Nevertheless, whereas Australia is cutting ties for the present series, it is still standing its ground for encounters with Afghanistan in other cricket events. Afghanistan’s recent defeat by three wickets on 11-20-23 in the T20 Cricket World Cup is proof of their superiority in the playing field.
From a statement issued by Cricket Australia, the organization has postponed its ODI scheduled for March 2023 against Afghanistan in consultation with the Australian Government, due to a pronounced worsening of the human rights situation for women and girls in Afghanistan. CA has been in liaison with the Australian government on the fiasco in Afghanistan during the last year.
CA remains steadfast in its support for enhancing women’s and girls’ roles in cricket from a global perspective.
The problems have existed since the emergence of the Taliban in August 2021 and their rights are completely restricted for Afghan women. The Taliban has denied women participation in the educational and working sectors in this way they were pushed to the periphery of society.
The only primary schooling that girls attend and the higher education of teenage ladies and women are banned. They come across barriers preventing them from using public facilities such as parks, gyms, and indoor swimming pools.
