As many cricket leagues owned by yesteryear cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Bharbajan Singh, Brett Lee, and Muttiah Murlitharan, among others, exist today, preliminary plans have been said to have been made and forwarded to BCCI for the inception of a ‘legends league.’.
Dainik Jagran reported that a few of the former India cricketers who have played in these leagues met BCCI Jay Shah and requested to organize a tournament that is similar to the Indian Premier League.
In this regard, we have recently been offered a proposal by some former cricketers. The BCCI source confined herself to saying, “We are deliberating on it,” as the daily mentioned.
The BCCI has not responded to the suggestion, and it seems almost impossible for a tournament like this to begin any sooner, but yes, it can be a reality in 2025.
Some players will take part in the competition who retired from international cricket and also from IPL. The approximate setting for all these teams will be derived from different cities of India, as done in the case of the IPL Teams.
Like IPL, the proposal means that an auction will be held in a manner in which the teams will bid for the players.
Some of the tournaments that it entails are Road Safety World Series, World Championship of Legends, Global Legends League, and Legends League, among others, which involve retired cricketers from all over the world. But all these tournaments are being conducted by private entities with no participation of any national cricket board.
The World Championship of Legends, which was won by an Indian team captained by Yuvraj, had already been held earlier this year in Birmingham, and ECB had granted its permission also.
