BCCI-IPL franchise talks: Auction purse and retention rules on the agenda

As expected, the annual BCCI and IPL team owners meeting has been scheduled for Monday, the 31st of July, in Mumbai. The conversations are expected to center on the Auction Purse, which is still at Rs 100 crore per team presently, or if that amount will be raised or not.

The rise in the Auction Purse has led people to believe that the big players are highly likely to switch in the 2025 IPL season. However, a higher Auction Purse could also attract the bigger names to the auctions, most of whom are already contracted to some team.

The concept of the Impact Player rule, which came into force in the 2024 IPL, also did not garner any special appreciation. It invited many controversies, and people were more concerned about how it affected the growth of the players. Of course, the BCCI will get the views of the franchise owners on this, though the board has opined that this particular rule helped the Indian players.

Retention rules are another crucial and debatable topic on the list. The BCCI and owners of the franchises in each team will decide and set the number of players in a team that will be allowed to be retained before the mega auction is held, and the RTM options are also still on the table. An experienced IPL team official noted that five could be the optimum retentions that should work for most of the franchises.

until the house is united on key agendas, BCCI’s capacity to maneuver in these intricate debates and decisions will likely attract thoughtful scrutiny.
