BCCI issues key directive on overseas players for IPL

Franchises featuring South African players have been given a severe setback before the IPL 2025 re-start. On Thursday, the BCCI directed the IPL franchises to release eight South African WTC-bound players by the latest May 26, excluding them from playing in the playoffs.

In a directive to the teams, BCCI also notified that West Indies cricketers will be free for the rest of the tournament suspended last week because of the India-Pakistan military standoff. In the aftermath of the ceasefire declaration, it was decided to restart the IPL on May 17 with the last match being shifted to June 3 from May 25, conflicting with the international commitments of South African, English and West Indian players.

Having a difficult time with unexpected circumstances, the BCCI had stringent negotiations with overseas boards such as CSA regarding player availability but the South African governing body has not given in in the wake of the WTC final against Australia to be held at Lord’s on June 11. It is interesting to note all six franchises in South Africa’s premier T20 league are IPL franchise-owned.

South Africa are set to convene in the UK on May 31 whereas the play-offs will start from May 29, and the date also marks the beginning of England’s home white-ball series against the West Indies. “The South African players have to report back to South Africa on or before Monday, May 26. West Indies players will be available for the entire tournament,” BCCI informed teams in an official message.

The non-availability of eight South African cricketers such as Tristan Stubbs (DC), Wiaan Mulder (SRH), Kagiso Rabada (GT), Corbin Bosch (MI), Ryan Rickelton (MI), Marco Jansen (PBKS), Lungi Ngidi (RCB), and Aiden Markram (LSG) could go against the teams which are competing to play in the playoffs.

SRH has let Mulder out early since they are already out and most likely Markram also may be released after the league phase with LSG highly unlikely to play in the playoffs. However, Jansen has been a huge impact player for Punjab Kings and the same holds good for MI opener Ryan Rickelton. Stubbs is a key player of Delhi Capitals and so is pace bowler Kagiso Rabada for Gujarat Titans. Titans will also be denied the services of in-form Jos Buttler who will miss the play-offs due to England duty.
