BCCI’s captaincy U-turn linked to Kohli’s retirement claim

Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli surprised everyone by declaring his Test cricket retirement. Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli surprised everyone by declaring his Test cricket retirement. Kohli, who is regarded as being among the greatest batters in contemporary cricket, retired from the longest version of the game as India’s victorious captain.

Overall, he was the world’s fourth most successful Test captain when he bid farewell to the format. While plenty of rumours are already floating about Kohli’s move, Sports Today reported that the BCCI dropped hints that they might name him captain again before choosing not to pursue the move. As per the report, Virat was intimated that he would be the captain once again during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

But after India’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Australia in the five-match series, BCCI took a full turn around and decided reportedly to begin the process of seeking a young captain. The report stated that Kohli was optimistic about being made captain again and that one of the primary reasons he played the Ranji Trophy encounter for Delhi versus Railways was to fulfil the BCCI mandates.

In the meantime, disrupted by recent India-Pakistan border tensions, the IPL will get under way again on Saturday with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-pressure match where all eyes will be on Virat Kohli after his recent Test retirement.

The surprise 10-day hiatus has presented the RCB and the KKR with altered objectives to realize and shared obstacles to overcome. The RCB are currently second on the table with 16 points from 11 games and a win here could see them qualify for the playoffs. KKR are sixth on the table with 11 points from 12 games, and a defeat will dent the defending champions’ chances of qualifying for the knockouts.
