Ben Stokes withdraws from T20 World Cup 2024 to prioritize fitness and All-Rounder role

Ben Stokes opts out of T20 World Cup to focus on Test bowling comeback.

The ECB announced that England Test skipper Ben Stokes has pulled out of this year’s T20 World Cup to regain full fitness as a bowler for the longest format. In a statement, the all-rounder stated that the decision to skip the World Cup in the USA and West Indies was a necessary sacrifice to help him live up to his role as a genuine all-rounder.

Having endured a long injury layoff post-knee surgery, Stokes felt the India tour highlighted his shortcomings with the ball. He is now working overtime on his bowling workload and fitness.

The 32-year-old informed the ECB of his call-up two months before the World Cup in October-November while wishing the team success in defending their title.

Stokes played a pivotal role in England‘s triumphant campaign in Australia last year, scoring the match-winning runs in the final. However, he’s been featured in just two T20s since continuing his rehabilitation.

Opting out of the upcoming IPL will also allow undivided focus on his goal. Stokes aims to bowl full throttle for county-side Durham before the English summer.

His decision comes after pulling out of ODI retirement last year to help England’s World Cup defense, only to struggle with the ball in the subsequent India Tests.
