Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah recently suggested that he wants to captain his country’s team and supported bowlers as more suitable for the captaincy role.
Bumrah was also previously suggested to be waiting in the wings as the next contender for Rohit Sharma’s position. He stated his readiness to lead the team should the opportunity arise. But the 29-year-old accepted the fact that the final call rests on the shoulders of team management and selectors.
Bumrah stated that bowlers in any form of cricket have the edge when it comes to captaining a side since it is tougher for them out in the field. He backed up his argument by referring to Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, and Pat Cummins, among others, as captains who also performed the bowling dual.
“I think the bowlers are the smart people because, you know, they have to get the batsman out, and we are obviously always fighting the odds,”
Bumrah said, referencing the fact that bowlers are always in front of the firing line and have to tackle a lot of adversities.
Such remarks from Bumrah come at a time when reports suggest that the BCCI could have young Shubman Gill as the next cabinet holder. But Bumrah’s confidence in the leadership skills of bowlers might influence the selectors to consider him a potential candidate for the top position in the near future.
