Dawid Malan announces retirement from international cricket.
England batter Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. Malan was recently featured in an interview with The Times wherein he confirmed his decision, following his omission from the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.
The left-handed batter finishes his career as one of only two England players, alongside Jos Buttler, to score centuries across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. However, Malan had not represented England since last year’s World Cup in India.
Malan acknowledged finding the mental demands of Test cricket draining due to its intensity over five days. While feeling capable at times, he felt inconsistent performances let him down.
The top-order batter burst onto the global stage with a stunning T20I debut in 2017 and cemented his place with a gritty 140 in the 2017-18 Ashes. However, he truly excelled in the T20 format.
Malan’s weight of runs and record-breaking century against New Zealand saw him rise to the top of the T20I rankings in 2020. He also became the fastest to 1000 T20I runs and played a key role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup triumph.
Over his career spanning 22 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20Is, Malan amassed 4416 runs. He leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer who established new benchmarks in English limited-overs cricket.
