Former President Donald Trump extended his heartfelt condolences and support to the family of Jonathan Diller, an NYPD detective who tragically lost his life during a routine traffic stop in Queens. Suspect Guy Rivera fatally shot Diller following a dispute over an illegally parked vehicle.
Accompanied by an aura of empathy, Trump visited Long Island upon receiving a personal invitation from Diller’s family, as the New York Post reported. During the encounter, Trump expressed his condolences to Stephanie Diller, Jonathan’s widow, and their young son Ryan, aged just one. The meeting also facilitated an introduction to Reverend Michael Duffy, who performed the couple’s wedding ceremony.
In a poignant moment, Rev. Duffy recounted his request to Trump:
“I expressed my gratitude for his presence and his kindness towards the grieving family. I asked him if he would join us in prayer.” With unwavering compassion, the former president readily agreed, responding, “Of course, Father Duffy.”
Joined by a room full of mourners, Trump participated in a collective recitation of the Lord’s Prayer, an emotional plea for forgiveness and protection from evil forces. The atmosphere shifted when Trump tenderly kissed baby Ryan on the forehead, prompting the child to clap with innocent delight. This heartfelt gesture alleviated some of the prevailing tension in the room, evoking a sense of solace.
Reflecting on the visit, Trump assured the New York Post that he would strive to ensure that Jonathan Diller’s untimely death would not be in vain. At such a tender age, he also expressed his astonishment that Ryan remains unaware of the profound impact this tragedy has had on his young life. Jonathan Diller was laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, where family, friends, and fellow officers bid him a final farewell.
Meanwhile, suspect Guy Rivera faces charges of first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon. Rivera is currently hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the ensuing shootout.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the charges, affirming, “Police Officer Diller was a father, husband, and son who dedicated his life to serving and protecting. His life was tragically taken as he carried out his duty. We will relentlessly pursue justice for Officer Diller, his family, and his brave colleagues in the NYPD, who risk their lives to safeguard our community.”
