Shubman Gill takes the place of the now-retired Rohit Sharma at the captaincy helm for the forthcoming Test series against England. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa has complimented the selection committee for including a young skipper Shubman Gill for the forthcoming Test series against England.
Gill takes the place of the now-retired Rohit Sharma at the captaincy helm. Virat Kohli is also no longer a part of the Test setup after retiring from the format last month. Uthappa highlighted how Gill, 25, could end up leading the Indian team for the next decade or so if he manages to do well in England.
You need to give plaudits to that selection panel because they have opted with foresight. Shubman is only 24 or 25 presently. If he achieves this, then you can visualize him captaining the Indian Test team for the next decade, the next 10 years, and that leaves Indian cricket in safe hands because he is a quality bat,” Uthappa opined at Star Sports.
Uthappa applauded Gill for his leadership in the recently-held IPL season, where he guided Gujarat Titans to the playoffs after a poor first stint as captain last season.
“We have observed how his captaincy has changed from the last year to this year just in IPL, just the way he captained Gujarat Titans, the intensity with which he operated, the calls he took on the field, and how he stood up for his colleagues with the umpires or whatever transpired on the field,” he said.
Uthappa indicated a rosy future for Gill as captain in international cricket. He will be an excellent leader. He is a good-thinking cricketer. He has a good head for the game. He knows his game so well. He is extremely talented, and he is a good human being. He possesses all the raw materials to be an excellent leader,” Uthappa clarified.
