Yadav’s dream debut sparks World Cup debate.
Young speedster Mayank Yadav’s dream debut in IPL 2024 has left a lasting impression on Lucknow Super Giants. His opening spells of 3/20 and match-winning efforts against Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore have been remarkable.
Clocking 156.7km/h, Yadav has generated excitement but a side strain cut short his run. Still, calls are growing to include him in the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
However, cricket pundits advise selectors against a knee-jerk reaction. Former Australian coach Tom Moody believes consistency over time must take priority over potential.
“You don’t know what he’s capable of doing over a long period under pressure. It’s the 2026 World Cup you should be looking at with him,” cautioned Moody.
Ex-Kiwi fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan feels if Yadav maintains red-hot form, ignoring him would be ‘crazy’. But others point out he has featured in just two games so far on debut.
With his searing pace and match-turning displays, Yadav has surely announced himself on the big stage. But whether selectors invest in him straightaway for the World Cup remains to be seen. Much rides on his injury recovery and future IPL display.
