Former India Cricketer Endorses MS Dhoni’s Decision to Step Down as CSK Captain

Gopinath backs Dhoni’s decision to hand over CSK captaincy to Gaikwad

Former India cricketer CD Gopinath has lauded MS Dhoni’s move to step down as Chennai Super Kings captain, passing the leadership mantle to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2023.

In a statement to PTI, the 94-year-old Gopinath—who began his Test career in 1951—said it was a wise choice for Dhoni to relinquish the role to nurture fresh talent. “It must have been Dhoni’s decision to promote Gaikwad since he understands his time at the helm is limited,” Gopinath observed.

Praising Dhoni’s balanced approach and people skills, Gopinath said the CSK talisman wanted to groom Gaikwad to take the franchise to greater heights. He recounted Dhoni’s remarkable journey from Jharkhand to representing India and successfully leading CSK.

Gopinath also backed CSK to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener, stating RCB may have to wait longer for their maiden title despite Virat Kohli’s pedigree. He tipped CSK and Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, as likely finalists.

The former India player advised Rohit Sharma against premeditating shots if he wished to succeed while cautioning that no single player can change Delhi Capitals’ fortunes—Rishabh Pant needs to understand the opposition well as captain.

Gopinath’s remarks underscored Dhoni’s legacy and leadership acumen in grooming the next generation of cricketers and captains.
