In a shocking move, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to become the next chief of the Indian team’s cricket squad. The application process for this position has been concluded and the BCCI has been presented with the application of Gambhir for the post alone.
The BCCI had advertised for the head coach in May 2024 after the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, quit after this ongoing T20 World Cup. Gambhir, who has also been working as a team mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is now ready to face the interview called by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday.
The lack of other big names in the fray for the head coach position is deemed worrisome; more cricketing greats are opting for multiple short-term engagements with franchise T20 leagues. But all the recent success, especially IPL 2024, has placed Gambhir firmly in KKR’s corner and, therefore, the BCCI favorite.
It is still expected to have a full overhaul of the team support with predictions pointing to the notion that Gambhir can choose his backroom team. The official announcement will come after the recommendation on behalf of the BCCI from the CAC.
