Gautam Gambhir advises Pant to focus, not on captaincy

With India captain Shubman Gill, Pant is part of the new leadership team in the Indian cricket squad following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Rishabh Pant will come under the spotlight in the India vs England Test series. With India captain Shubman Gill, Pant is part of the new leadership team in the Indian cricket squad following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Although Pant is a match-winner, something he has consistently shown in Tests, his current form is not quite awe-inspiring. Other than a century in Lucknow Super Giants’ previous IPL 2025 game, Rishabh Pant did not enjoy a good outing. Hemang Badani, the IPL team Delhi Capitals’ coach, has told Gautam Gambhir to tell India vice-captain Rishabh Pant to forget about his leadership roles and concentrate on batting.

“It’s great that a person like Gautam Gambhir, being the head coach, talks to him, talks to him and tells him, ‘Rishabh tu apna game khel.’ Don’t overthink captaincy, vice-captaincy, you’re the second-in-command, none of that.

There’s a certain manner in which you’ve batted over the years and that has served you well. And I believe it will serve us well if he does that again because he is a batsman who comes to the bat at moments when the second new ball is approaching,” Hemang Badani said to HT.

Badani said Rishabh Pant does not need to alter his attacking approach. I hope it does not change one bit. I feel that he is one guy who has got the proper mix of attacking stroke-play and defensive stroke-play in this cricket. So I don’t see why you should attempt to alter that,” Badani said to Hindustan Times in an exclusive interview.
