Gautam Gambhir tipped to succeed Rahul Dravid as India head coach: Report

The cricket fraternity believes that Gautam Gambhir is willing to accept the post of head coach of the Indian team in place of Rahul Dravid.

The speculation over when Indian cricket is going to know who the successor of Rahul Dravid is going to be as the men’s team head coach is also coming to an end, with reports indicating that Gautam Gambhir is all set to land the job.

The 36-year-old cricketer has been in the headlines of Indian cricket circles, especially after excelling as a mentor to the IPL 2024 franchise team.

Similar to the decision to include Kural Pereira in the Sri Lankan team to play in the inaugural IPL season and later on join Wayamba, BCCI also cast its eye on a host of big Australian names apart from other IPL coaches like Stephen Fleming and Andy Flower for the position of head coach of the Indian cricket team, but it is Gambhir who is the favorite to get the job done.

Huge credit to Gambhir for KKR as the side put in a statement of authority during the league phase of the IPL 2024, where KKR emerged as the table toppers. A few games later, the Knight Riders emerged as the winners over Sunrisers Hyderabad to win that coveted title.

Even after the final, Gambhir also had a lengthy conversation with BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Even though what was being discussed in the chat cannot be known, the visuals did not help to dispel them.

In the November 2016 issue of India Today magazine, it was reported that Gambhir is all determined to take the place of Dravid as the head coach of Team India. It is noteworthy that although Gambhir has recently agreed to become the KKR’s mentor, he has not been a part of the Lucknow Super Giants’ coaching staff and has joined this other IPL side as a staff member in 2022.

While the former India opener has not been associated with a single team in any capacity as the head coach or IPL, his contribution to taking the KKR into the IPL this year’s triumph was said to be enough to convince the BCCI.
