India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s straight-talking ‘Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar’ mention during team huddle left expectations clear before Shubman Gill & Co. India coach Gautam Gambhir left expectations clear before the Shubman Gill-led unit as they gear up for the 5-match Test assignment against England.
Since the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin have retired, the Indian unit has a challenging task in hand. England has not been a cakewalk for the subcontinent boys, but this time around, the problems are manifold. Gambhir, though, would like the new generation of players to look towards the chance that lies before them, rather than the individuals they are missing.
In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir presented his players with two choices – either consider that the team is short of three of its most seasoned players, or the chance of accomplishing something special.
“There are two ways to look at this. One is that we are short of our three most experienced players (Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin), or we have a great chance to do something special for the country. When I see this group around me, I feel there’s hunger, passion, and the commitment to do something special.
If we sacrifice, if we step out of our comfort zones, if we begin fighting, not daily, but every session, every hour, every ball, I think we can have a memorable tour. Ensure we begin that from today only. We begin enjoying playing for the country because there’s no bigger honour,” Gambhir told the huddle.
Both Virat and Rohit retired from Test cricket midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, days ahead of when the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee was to select the team for the England tour. It is not yet clear what has been conveyed to them by the BCCI and the selectors that made them make such a sudden retirement announcement.
