Gujarat Titans hand leadership mantle to Shubman Gill
After Hardik Pandya moved to Mumbai Indians ahead of the new IPL season, Gujarat Titans have picked youngster Shubman Gill as their new captain. Head coach Ashish Nehra is excited to see how Gill fares in his new role, considering his previous captaincy experience with India A and Punjab.
Nehra feels Gill’s leadership growth will be as important as his growth as a player. “Many players like Hardik and Shreyas Iyer delivered for their teams in the first captaincy assignment. This will also be a learning experience for Gill,” the coach said.
Batting coach Gary Kirsten echoed the sentiment, saying leadership duties will help Gill evolve. “We will support him to ensure he gets the best out of his players. New captains always face challenges, but Gill is determined and motivated,” Kirsten noted.
The coach also pointed out how Gill has risen to numerous career hurdles, like cementing his place at numero tres for India in Tests following Cheteshwar Pujara. Gill excelled against England during India’s recent home series success.
Gujarat will rely on Gill’s talent when they begin their debut IPL season facing five-time champions Mumbai Indians on March 24 in Ahmedabad. The head and batting coaches believe that captaincy will bring the best out of the young opener’s potential.
