Harry Brook named captain of England’s ODI and T20I teams

In a significant shift in England’s white-ball cricket structure, Harry Brook has been named the new ODI and T20I captain. The 26-year-old replaces Jos Buttler, who stepped down after England’s disappointing ICC Champions Trophy exit in March.

Brook’s promotion was on the cards as he had been vice-captain and captained the ODI team against Australia last year in Buttler’s absence. Brook is rated as the world’s second-best Test batsman after Joe Root at present. Brook earned international acclaim for his record-breaking triple century (317) against Pakistan in Multan last year.

“It is a real privilege to be offered the role as England’s white-ball captain,” Brook added. “From being a lad who played cricket for Burley in Wharfedale, I have always dreamt of representing Yorkshire, representing England, and hopefully one day leading the team. To now be offered the chance to do that means a great deal to me.”

Prior to the season with the IPL, Brook opted out of his Delhi Capitals contract for remaining committed to the English team responsibilities. This decision at the time was questionable but now appears part of a strategy to reach higher.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference,” he added.

While Brook is new to senior-level captaincy, he showcased his leadership skills during a closely contested 3-2 series against Australia and brings experience from the Under-19 World Cup and The Hundred.

Despite Ben Stokes being the presumed candidate for captaincy initially, his injury and previous ODI retirement made a way for the appointment of Brook. “Harry has got an excellent cricket brain,” said Rob Key. Brook’s inaugural captaincy series starts in May when England plays host to the West Indies.
