ICC has put India on the list of potential places that it will use to host the Women’s World Cup in case the organization is forced to relocate the event out of Bangladesh.
The current political instabilities in Bangladesh have made the ICC think twice before awarding the rights of hosting the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup to Bangladesh. While there are still 57 days before the start of the tournament, that is, England vs. South Africa on 3 October, the ICC has shortlisted India among the other venues for the World Cup.
For several weeks now, Bangladesh has been undergoing an anti-government movement, and last week Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on Monday; she flew to India on Monday shortly after that.
In Bangladesh, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has stepped in with the idea of forming an interim government. In the meantime, former Bangladesh captain and a Member of Parliament of Awami League party Mashrafe Mortaza also suffered a loss as his house in Narail was set ablaze by the protesters.
ESPNCricinfo had reported that the UAE, India, and Sri Lanka have been finalized as the backup venues for the ten-women’s team tournament to be played between October 3 and 20.
“The ICC is constantly observing these factors in relation to the BCB, concerning their security departments and additionally, personal security advisors hired by the organization,” the statement read. “Workshop safety includes the protection of all the participants.”
