BCCI, Kirti Azad pays tribute to 1983 World Cup heroes.
As India celebrated 41 years of its historic first World Cup triumph on Monday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah and former cricketer Kirti Azad lauded the legendary heroes of 1983.
Taking to social media, Shah recalled how Kapil Dev-led India’s victory redefined the sport in the country. “A defining moment that continues to inspire generations,” he tweeted.
India had triumphed against the mighty West Indies at Lord’s under Kapil’s leadership. Batting first, the team managed a modest 183, before bowling out the Caribbeans for 140.
Azad also acknowledged the impact of that iconic triumph. Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged Man of the Match for his all-round show in the final.
Kapil lifting the trophy at Lord’s encapsulated India’s jubilation and helped foster a passion for cricket nationwide.
Since then, India has cemented its place as a force to reckon with. From debuting at the 1975 edition, the team has remained a regular feature, emerging as 2011 champions.
The 1983 heroes laid the foundation for the stellar rise of Indian cricket. Their exploits served as a reminder of the spirit and talent that could overcome any odds on cricket’s biggest stage.
