India clinches 280-run victory over Bangladesh in first test

The Indian cricket team defeated Bangladesh with a massive 280-run victory in the first Test match that was held in Chennai on Sunday. A daunting target of 515 runs, however, saw Bangladesh struggle to create any sort of impact as they were bowled out for 234 in their second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin was brilliant with the ball, returning six figures for 88.

This victory marked a big milestone for head coach Gautam Gambhir, who won his first Test as captain of the team. After the match, Gambhir said on social media, “A fantastic start! Well done, boys!”

India captain Rohit Sharma insisted on building a team around strong bowling options as they prepare for challenges coming their way in the World Test Championship.

“We want to build our team around strong bowling options to adapt to any conditions that might come,”

He said at the post-match presentation.

The match underlined India’s depth in batting and bowling, with Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill scoring fluent centuries each to set up a comprehensive win. Rohit spoke about how prepared his team is for different conditions, underlining the varied bowling attack that India can adopt at home and abroad.

With their team struggling to get back into the game, the Bangladeshi batsmen succumbed to pressure, with Ashwin running riot at his home ground of Chepauk.

“It was a great result considering what lies ahead for us,”

Rohit said.

“We had a great lead-up to the Test match and got the desired result.”
