The new T20 World Cup champions, the Indian cricket team, are in a rather awkward situation as they wait to get back to India. In what can be best described as a hurricane situation in Barbados, all the flights have been grounded, the players are locked in their hotels, and they cannot travel as planned.
India, led by Rohit Sharma, crushed South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final on Saturday. The team was to leave for their respective destinations on Sunday. But up to Monday, there remains no indication of when they will return, with more poor weather restraining them in the team hotel.
Documents state that the Barbados airport had to close for the day, and all flights were suspended because of the approaching hurricane Beryl, which was ranked as a Category Four storm. Travel plans cannot thus be affirmed in the next 24 hours as the authorities are being very cautious not to do anything that may compromise flying activity.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that the issue was understood, explaining that the team’s welcome-back-home celebration will only be conducted after they return from Barbados. He also confirmed that the Board is in the middle of this and can only schedule the celebration once the traveling is done.
The position in Barbados has yet to be resolved, with the most important thing being the security and preservation of the Indian cricket squad. The BCCI and the team management will be in regular consultations to see the players return to India as soon as the situation regarding the adverse climate and suspension of flights becomes favorable.
