India’s T20 World Cup Triumph and the coaching conundrum

While Team India under Rohit Sharma gained a second T20 World Cup crown, attention now turns towards the side’s coaching structure. Rahul Dravid is at the end of his term as head coach, and the BCCI is already planning for the next head coach. Perhaps Gambhir could replace Dravid soon.

The president of the BCCI, Mr Roger Binny, congratulated India, and to the best of his predictions about Gambhir, he is a candidate considering his experience. Speaking about Gautam Gambhir, he said, “Gautam Gambhir is a very talented player, and if he takes up the job, it will be very fruitful for Indian cricket.” The man has experience in all three forms, and what India requires is a coach who has represented the country.

Binny also agreed that the absence of more experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20 international team format will be a huge loss. “They have been brilliant, and it will be very hard to access them instantly in the next season. If we look at the talent pool existing in IPL, the next generation is always waiting.”

Gradually, through Rahul Dravid’s leadership, the Indian team has improved and even reached the finals of major competitions. The T20 World Cup victory in 2024 put an end to India’s 11-year ICC title wait because of the unity contributed by the former great batting stalwart and the methodical way he has shaped the team.

“Rahul as a cricketer has been great, and what he has done for the side has been brilliant”, Binny commented. ”He did a fantastic job with them. Moreover, it is unfortunate that he lost some games, namely the last World Cup.”
