Former Pakistan captain alleges ball tampering by Indian team.
The manner of India’s victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup has come under scrutiny with allegations of ball tampering by the Indian team.
Despite Arshdeep Singh’s impressive spell of 3/37 powering India’s win, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq expressed doubts over the ball reverse-swinging too early.
While appreciating Jasprit Bumrah’s ability to generate reverse swing, Inzamam questioned how Arshdeep was able to do the same in his opening spells.
The timing of the ball reversing led Inzamam to allege that “serious work was done” on the ball, urging match officials to remain vigilant.
Indian cricket had witnessed controversies related to ball-tampering in the past involving Tendulkar and others. However, Inzamam softened his stance saying heavy batting could have impacted the ball’s behaviour too.
Nonetheless, Inzamam’s accusations have stirred debate at a time when the sport is trying to distance itself from past scams. Umpires are under scrutiny to closely monitor activities around the ball.
While Indian cricket faces yet another scrutiny over dubious tactics, Inzamam’s comments regardless of intent have cast a shadow over an important victory.
