Jaiswal fumes over controversial DRS call in Melbourne test

Indian cricket team batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was left frustrated after a contentious Decision Review System call on Day 5 of the fourth Test match against Australia in Melbourne. Jaiswal, who looked in good touch against the Australian bowlers, was dismissed as he got caught behind off Pat Cummins’s delivery.

Jaiswal, playing his first Test, attempted to pull a short ball from Cummins in the 71st over of India’s second innings. He got an edge which wicketkeeper Alex Carey pouched safely. The on-field umpire gave him not out as he did not detect any edge, but the Australian players, confident that he had nicked it, reviewed the decision.

However, the snickometer had no spike, and the resonance of the ball hitting something in the background wasn’t particularly clear, but the third umpire decided the deflection happened only because the ball kissed the bottom glove of Jaiswal. As he walked out, he was seen furiously arguing with the on-field umpires.

While the decision was overturned, commentators Sunil Gavaskar, Deep Dasgupta, and Irfan Pathan objected to this, but Ricky Ponting said that the dismissal was fair enough. Meanwhile, ex-Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin took to posting cryptic messages depicting the struggle of skipper Rohit Sharma and his team on this day of importance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit struggled to deal with form and survived the early overs, but he was dismissed without too much score. He was cautious in his approach, getting only nine runs off 40 balls. After he had survived the spell from fast bowlers, he tried to take on Cummins and a thick outside edge was gobbled by Mitchell Marsh at gully. With shoulders slumped in disappointment, Rohit walked away. The floodgates opened.
