Root eyes batting milestones in upcoming England-Sri Lanka Tests.
Joe Root will be key to England’s fortunes in the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting August 21. The series presents the star batter with opportunities to achieve multiple feats.
Root finished as the leading scorer against West Indies last month. He now needs 290 runs to surpass Alastair Cook’s tally and become England’s highest run-getter versus Sri Lanka.
Overall, Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for most runs (2212) in England-SL Tests.
The former captain is 446 shy of Cook’s mark of 12472 runs to become England’s leading run-scorer ever in the format.
A haul of 446 runs will propel Root to fifth place in the all-time Test run-scorers list.
He also has a shot at becoming the first to notch 5000 runs in WTC history. Currently on 4598, Root requires just 402 more runs to reach the milestone.
The rock-solid number-one Test batter holds the record for most centuries and half-centuries in WTC already.
Root will be key to England’s fortunes on home soil as the form man chases multiple batting landmarks against Sri Lanka.
